40% of SaaS Pages Have a Speed Problem — And 17% Won't Even Fully Load
Performance was the fourth worst-scoring category in our 50 SaaS landing page study, averaging 68.5/100. Four in ten pages scored below 70.
But the headline number understates the problem. Eight pages — 17% of our total sample — didn't even complete analysis. They timed out after 30 seconds of loading. These weren't obscure startups. Linear, Slack, Webflow, Pika, and Dub were among the pages that couldn't fully render in time.
If an automated tool running on a fast connection can't finish loading your page in 30 seconds, real visitors on mobile networks are having a much worse experience.
What Slow Actually Means
The pages that successfully completed analysis ranged from 25 to 95 on performance. Spendesk loaded in 2.35 seconds with 66 images — acceptable but not great. Other pages scored 85+ by keeping image counts low and implementing basic optimization.
The relationship between image count and performance score was one of the clearest correlations in our dataset. Pages with high image counts consistently scored lower, and our audits frequently flagged excessive images as the primary performance bottleneck.
This isn't surprising, but it's worth stating plainly: in 2026, with all the lazy loading, CDN, and compression tools available, image bloat remains the number one performance killer on SaaS landing pages. Not JavaScript bundles, not third-party scripts, not web fonts. Images.
The Timeout Problem
The eight pages that timed out share a common trait: they're JavaScript-heavy single-page applications that rely on client-side rendering to display their content. The browser needs to download, parse, and execute significant JavaScript before any meaningful content appears.
This affects conversion in two ways.
First, visitors on slower connections experience a blank or partially loaded page for several seconds. Research consistently shows that each additional second of load time increases bounce probability. After 3 seconds, a significant percentage of visitors leave. After 5 seconds, you've lost the majority of mobile visitors.
Second, it affects SEO. Google's crawlers have limited rendering budgets. If your page requires extensive JavaScript execution to display content, search engines may not fully index it. This means your carefully written headline, social proof, and CTA might be invisible to Google.
Webflow timing out in our audit is particularly notable. As a website builder that hosts millions of sites and promotes performance as a feature, their own homepage being too heavy to fully render sends a contradictory signal.
The Cost You Don't See
The insidious thing about performance problems is that they're invisible in your analytics. You see the visitors who loaded the page and bounced. You don't see the visitors who abandoned before the page finished loading — they never register as a visit at all.
This means your actual traffic is higher than what your analytics reports. Some percentage of people who clicked through to your page gave up before it loaded. You paid for that click (through ads, SEO effort, or brand awareness), and the visitor never even saw your offer.
For pages with 3+ second load times, this invisible abandonment can represent 10-20% of total inbound traffic. On a page getting 10,000 monthly visitors, that's 1,000-2,000 people you're losing before the conversation even starts.
What Fast Pages Do Right
Pages scoring 85+ on performance in our audit shared practical patterns:
Low image count with lazy loading. The fastest pages used fewer than 25 images total, with lazy loading for anything below the first viewport. The hero section loaded immediately with 2-3 optimized images; everything else loaded as the visitor scrolled.
Server-side rendering or static generation. Pages that delivered HTML directly — rather than requiring JavaScript execution to build the page — consistently loaded faster. Static site generators and server-rendered frameworks (Next.js SSG/SSR, Astro, Hugo) have a structural advantage here.
Minimal third-party scripts. Every chat widget, analytics tool, A/B testing script, and tracking pixel adds load time. The fastest pages were selective about what third-party code they included, and they loaded non-critical scripts asynchronously.
Optimized hero section. The first thing the visitor sees loads fast, even if the rest of the page takes longer. This means the hero image is properly sized and compressed, critical CSS is inlined, and the above-the-fold content doesn't depend on external resources.
The Quick Performance Audit
Before running a full Leak Detector analysis, you can check two things yourself:
Test on your phone with a slow connection. Enable network throttling in your browser or use your phone on a 3G connection. If the page takes more than 3 seconds to display meaningful content, you have a problem that affects a significant portion of your visitors.
Count your images. Right-click → Inspect → Network tab → filter by "Img." If you have more than 40 images on a landing page, image optimization should be your first priority. Compress, resize, and implement lazy loading.
Fixing Performance
Priority order for maximum impact:
First: Compress and resize all images. Use WebP format, serve appropriate sizes for different viewports, and lazy-load everything below the fold. This single change is typically worth 20+ points on the performance score.
Second: Audit third-party scripts. List every external script your page loads. Remove any that aren't directly contributing to conversion. Defer or async-load the rest.
Third: If you're running a JavaScript SPA, implement server-side rendering or static generation for your landing page. The landing page doesn't need to be a dynamic application — it's a document. Treat it like one.
Fourth: Set a performance budget. Define a maximum page weight (under 2MB is a good target for a landing page) and a maximum load time (under 2 seconds on a fast connection). Add these as automated checks in your deployment pipeline.
